The publisher and two editors of the weekly “Financial Gazette”
are to stand trial on charges of criminal defamation on 5 July
1995. The charges relate to an article published by the newspaper
in which it was alleged that President Robert Mugabe had married
his secretary, Grace Marufu, at a civic wedding over the Easter
weekend.
Elias Rusike, Chief Executive of Modus Publications, Zimbabwe’s
leading private newspaper group, Trevor Ncube, editor of the
Modus weekly “Financial Gazette”, and “Financial Gazette”‘s
deputy-editor Simba Makunike were remanded on free bail when they
appeared in court in the capital Harare on Thursday 15 June.
