May 2022 alone has seen local administrations cancel concerts by Kurdish singer Aynur Doğan and musicians Metin and Kemal Kahraman, and the banning of 'Don Kîxot', a Kurdish adaptation of Cervantes's 'Don Quijote'.
This statement was originally published on bianet.org on 18 May 2022.
Many concerts, theater plays, and other events in Kurdish have been banned in the last three years. Artists and musicians have difficulties finding places to organize events.
On November 7, 2021, President and Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was welcomed with the Kurdish song “Dar Hejîrokê”, in Batman, eastern Turkey, when he visited the region to take part in a mass opening ceremony.
Newspapers close to the government reported this with the headline, “President Erdoğan sang Kurdish songs with the youth in Batman.” Less than a week later, the AKP-led Keçiören District Municipality, in the capital of Ankara, canceled a concert by the Kurdish musician Mem Ararat.
Many Kurdish culture and arts events had been canceled before Mem Ararat’s concert. Incidents of ancellation, prevention or prior restriction, and censorship have taken place since then.
Three event bans in two days
On May 13, the Derince District Municipality canceled Kurdish singer Aynur Doğan’s concert and the Çayırova District Municipality banned a Kurdish theater play in Kocaeli province. Both municipalities are run by the AKP.
On May 16, the Muş Governor’s Office canceled a concert by Metin-Kemal Kahraman.
There is the cancellation or prevention of planned events on one side of the coin, and on the other side the indirect censorship of artists and musicians.
Pervin Çakar, a Kurdish opera artist, has been drawing attention to this issue for a while on her Twitter account. The organisers have not been able to find a hall for her concerts because there are Kurdish works in their repertoire.
In February, the Şermola Performance Theater Group said on Twitter that they could not find a hall to stage their play.
