**Updates IFEX CH alert dated 3 February 1995**
Namik Berberovic, a Bosnian television journalist, remains in
detention in Bosnia. There are concerns for his safety and his
health. Berberovic, who works for the Bosnian-Austrian OSSA
television, was detained on 26 January 1995 as he was travelling
from the Sarajevo airport to the city. (see IFEX alert) He is
believed to be held in Lukavica. He is an accredited journalist
by the United Nations press offices in the region.
Shanaat Nahrawand (f), a freelancer with dual Jordanian and
Bosnian citizenship, was detained by the Serbian authorities in
Bosnia on 23 February 1995. Nahrawand writes for the Sarajevo
weekly “Dani” and various Jordanian news organizations. She was
taken into custody on the same route as Berberovic at the time of
his detention. She is believed to be held in Ilidza. Nahrawand is
also an accredited journalist by the United Nations press offices
in the region.
According to CPJ’s sources, both are accused of being spies and
are held for exchange with Serbian prisoners of war.

is a flagrant violation of their right to “seek, receive, and
impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of
frontiers,” guaranteed by Article 19 of the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights of the United Nations

journalists as spies or prisoners of war, and recognize that they
are noncombatants who are trying to carry out their professional
duties of gathering and distributing the news
