(CMFR/IFEX) – A reporter and cameraman for a local broadcast news network were reported missing on 28 September 2002 in Indanan, Jolo, in southern Philippines, according to three Manila-based newspapers.
“BusinessWorld”, the “Manila Standard” and “The Daily Tribune” reported on 30 September that GMA 7 reporter Carlo Lorenzo and his cameraman, Gilbert Ordiales, were abducted on the night of 28 September by members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). According to the news reports, Lorenzo was scheduled to interview Arola Abubakar, an MNLF commander, when he was kidnapped. “The Daily Tribune” reported that Lorenzo contacted GMA 7 before his disappearance. GMA 7 has had no comment on the matter.
Newspaper reports said that Lorenzo and Ordiales’ driver, Ammil Paradji, reported the incident to police when the reporter and cameraman failed to return. “BusinessWorld” reported that Lorenzo had been advised by the military commander stationed in Jolo not to proceed with the interview.
