(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Minister of the Interior Walter Guiteras, RSF
“is protesting the espionage that the ATB television station and ‘La Razon’
newspaper have been subjected to,” and asks that the responsible parties be
identified and punished.
On 11 September 1999, a number of microphones were found in the ATB station
and “La Razon” newspaper offices. Six microphones were found in the ATB
studios, including in the offices of Raúl Garáfulic Gutiérrez and Lorenzo
Carri, the station’s president and director respectively. Two other
microphones were discovered in the newspaper’s offices, one of these in
Director Raúl Garáfulic Lehm’s office. In addition, three ATB and two “La
Razon” telephone lines had been intercepted. Representatives of the two
media filed complaints with authorities.
