(EFJA/IFEX) – Editors-in-chief Merid Zelleke of “Satanaw” and Mengistu Wolde Selassie of “Moged” were among several editors-in-chief of private newspapers who were ordered to report to the Central Investigation Department. Both were detained after making statements to the police and were not entitled to bail.
On 4 July 2001, the editor-in-chief of “Dagim Wonchif”, Leyikun Ingida, made a statement to police. He was released on bail of 5,000 birr (approx. US$600).
The editors-in-chief of “Netsebrak”, “Netsanet”, “Wogahta” and “Medina” private newspapers were expected to report to the police on 4 July. It is not known as yet whether they will be entitled to bail after making statements to police.
Most of these journalists are making statements to police in connection with reports printed in their respective publications related to Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin and the recent instability that has developed in the country.
