**For background to previous incidents, see IFEX
alerts dated 25 July, 10 July, 27 June, 16 May, 21
April 1995 and others**
The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) ordered two opposition
weeklies closed on 6 August 1995 in Gaza. Orders for the closures
of the pro-Hamas “Al Watan” and of “Al Istiklal” (see also Al
Istiqlal), a paper linked to the Islamic jihan movement, were
delivered by Palestinian police. Publishers Imad Falouji and Alaa
Saftawi believe the measures are linked to articles which
criticized the PNA and its head, Yasser Arafat, published in both
newspapers. Both publishers were detained on 5 August for a few
hours and released after extensive questioning.
