(RSF/IFEX) – RSF is expressing its concern over the questioning of two
journalists working for the liberal daily “Al Wafd”. According to RSF’s
sources, on 7 and 8 January 1999, Abbas al-Terabily and Mohammed Abdel
Alim were questioned on charges of “publication of propaganda harming
the public interest” after reporting on a labour action by Central Bank
workers. They were released on bail. If found guilty, they may be
sentenced to up to two years in jail.

imparting news of interest to their fellow citizens and exercising their
right to freedom of speech, as defined in the International Covenant on
Civil and Political Rights, which has been ratified by Egypt
