(MW/IFEX) – On 10 August 1998, two Bangladeshi journalists received death
threats on the campus of Dhaka University (in Dhaka, the capital city of
Bangladesh). Kailash Sarker, university correspondent for the daily
“Sangbad”, and a correspondent for the daily “Janakantha”, surname Mamun,
were threatened with death by a top-ranking leader of the Chattra league,
the student wing of the ruling party. On both 8 and 9 August, the two
journalists, who are also students at the university, ran stories in their
respective publications on the terrorist activities of the armed cadre of
the Chattra league in some areas of Dhaka University.
On 10 August, some leaders of the Chattra league rushed into the office of
the Dhaka University Journalists’ Association and ordered the two
journalists either to leave the campus or to leave the profession. One
Chattra league leader, Ebadat Hossain, allegedly angrily threatened that if
they did not follow the order, the journalists might be killed on the
campus.
