(CEHURDES/IFEX) – On 7 February 2003, the Nepalese authorities released three detainees, including two journalists, further to a Supreme Court order.
Those freed on 7 February include Om Sharma and Krishna Prasad Khanal, who are both journalists affiliated with Kathmandu-based pro-Maoist newspapers. Sharma, a Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) council member, spent nearly 15 months in prison.
The releases come a week after the Nepalese government and Maoist rebels announced a cease-fire and agreed to initiate a peace process. Nearly 150 journalists were detained during the nine-month state of emergency that ended in August 2002. Media organisations say nearly a dozen journalists remain behind bars in the country.
