(MFWA/IFEX) – Mark-Anthony Vinorkor and Samuel Tei Adano, a reporter and photographer, respectively, for the state-owned newspaper “Daily Graphic”, were violently attacked by security personnel working for the state-run Tema Development Corporation (TDC) on 22 October 2008.
MFWA’s correspondent reported that the incident occurred at Community Four, where the two had gone to cover a demolition exercise by a combined team of TDC guards and police officers to rid the town of its illegal structures.
Vinorkor told the MFWA correspondent that he was hit several times in the chest and slapped twice in the face for attempting to save Adano from further attacks from the guards. According to the reporter, the guards punched Adano and seized his camera, which they later damaged.
However, the guards’ supervisor has denied the attacks on the journalists. Police in Tema, a town adjoining Accra, have since launched an investigation into the matter.
