(NUSOJ/IFEX) – NUSOJ condemns the arrest of two radio journalists by an officer of the National Security Agency (NSA) of the Transitional Federal Government.
Heavily armed forces first entered the offices of Somaliweyn Radio, a privately owned radio station in Mogadishu, on 13 January 2008. An NSA officer arrested journalist Bashir Mohammed Abdulkadir, after telling the journalist that they wanted to question him.
Following hours of no news about Abdulkadir, the director of Somaliweyn Radio, Abdirahman Mohamed Hudeyfi, contacted the commander that arrested Abdulkadir. The officer told Hudeyfi to come to see him. When the director met the NSA commander, he was also arrested.
The reason behind these arrests is unknown.
“We denounce this move and demand the immediate and unconditional release of the two journalists”, said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General. “The Transitional Government must know that it is responsible for what its security forces are continuously doing”.
