(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Emile Tompapa, the president of the National Communications Council (Conseil national de la communication, CNC), RSF protested the CNC’s decision to suspend the private weeklies “L’oeil” and “Le Soleil” for one month. The organisation asked Tompapa to cancel his decision and allow the two publications to continue publishing. “We must remind you that Guinea ratified the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 19 of which guarantees freedom of expression,” added Robert Ménard, RSF’s secretary general.
According to information obtained by RSF, on 28 March 2000, the CNC suspended “L’oeil” and “Le Soleil” for one month, from 31 March to 30 April. This decision was made following complaints lodged by a number of private businessmen over different articles that appeared in the two publications. Before taking this action – the most severe one provided for under the law – the CNC first summonsed the authors of the articles in question.
