Ukrainian journalist Oles Buzyna was shot dead on Thursday 16 April 2015 in Kiev. He was the former editor-in-chief of Segodnya newspaper and was known for being pro-Russian and a critic of President Petro Poroshenko’s government. According to reports, he left the paper in March because he felt he was not able to express criticism of the Ukrainian government. A day before Buzyna’s death, former MP Oleg Kalashnikov was also killed in Kiev. Both men were allies of the former Ukraine president Victor Yanukovych, causing some to draw ties between the two killings.
In the days following Buzyna’s murder IFEX members have reacted, many of them calling for a prompt and impartial investigation into the attack.
