**Updates IFEX alerts dated 12 and 10 April 1996**
According to colleagues of murdered “Obshchaya gazeta”
correspondent Nadezhda Chaikova, the office of the Prosecutor
General of Russia has not opened an investigation into her death
and the local Chechen village prosecutor who originally took up
the case is unlikely to go further because of limited resources.
Consequently, the editors of “Obshchaya gazeta” have mounted
their own investigation and currently have a reporter on the
scene checking various hypotheses of her murder. The newspaper’s
editors have refrained from making any allegations or speculating
as to the persons or groups responsible until more conclusive
evidence is uncovered.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to authorities:
her murder and to announce publicly the results of their findings
