(IFJ/IFEX) – In a 23 September 2003 letter to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the IFJ voiced its concern over attempts by Mayor Jose Galario Jr. to censor radio station DxMV-Radyo Ukay in Valencia City, Bukidnon.
According to the IFJ’s information, Mayor Galario padlocked DxMV-Radyo Ukay’s premises at approximately 6:00 a.m. (local time) on 17 September. He took this drastic action because the station was apparently allowing broadcasters not accredited by Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) to anchor its programmes. Galario criticised the radio station, claiming it failed to regulate its programmes and was allowing itself to be used for political slander.
The IFJ recalls that it is completely inappropriate for an individual to take this kind of action against any media organisation. If ethical violations have been committed, an individual must take the appropriate action by filing a complaint before the KBP or the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), rather than taking matters into their own hands.
