(MISA/IFEX) – Veteran journalist Henry Muhanika, aged 50, and his wife Devota Muhanika, aged 41, were hospitalised after sustaining injuries in a blast at their Manzese Kilimani home in Dar es Salaam, the local English language daily state newspaper “Daily News” reported on Friday 10 August 2001.
Police, in collaboration with bomb experts, have yet to establish the actual cause of the blast.
On 9 August, Dar es Salaam Regional Police Commander Alfred Tibaigana told reporters in Dar es Salaam that Muhanika and members of his family were asleep when the explosion occurred at around 10:20 p.m. (local time). The journalist injured his face, legs and back. His wife injured her right arm, head and shoulders. A relative told the “Daily News” that their condition has improved.
Tibaigana said the couple’s seven-year-old daughter Jacquline suffered minor injuries and was treated and discharged. This is the second incident of this nature to occur at Muhanika’s residence in the past two months. The first incident took place on 20 July, when someone threw what was believed to be a bomb towards Muhanika’s house. It missed its target and fell into a nearby barn, Muhanika said.
Muhanika was formerly the editor of “The East African” and had worked for Tanzania News Agency (SHIHATA), “Daily News” and “Sunday News”. He also owns the Dar es Salaam-based PR Communications, a public relations company.
