(MFWA/IFEX) – Henry Addo, an investigative reporter of Metropolitan Television Station, an independent television station in Accra, was violently attacked by members of the vigilante “land guards” group on 17 January 2007, in the Accra suburb of Chorkor.
Addo sustained various wounds to his eyes, back, head and fingers. The assailants, who numbered about 15, also seized the journalist’s digital camera, slapped the television station’s driver, George Antwi, and vandalised the vehicle.
Addo told MFWA that he had gone to the area to conduct an interview and take footage of a mechanic’s shop for a news story on small-scale industries in Accra.
“As I started filming the mechanic, a leader of a group that was guarding a nearby disputed land ordered his men to attack me and seize my camera,” Addo said.
The police later came to his rescue and arrested four of the assailants.
Addo was later treated at a medical facility and discharged.
The assailants have been arraigned before a court in Accra and are scheduled to reappear in court on 20 February.
