(CJES/IFEX) – The Voronezh law enforcement agencies have suspended the publication of opposition newspaper “My – Grazhdane”, reported Gennady Pankov, the paper’s editor-in-chief and an activist with the Voronezh division of the movement Solidarnost.
Police officials went to the printing house where the papers were being printed around 6:30 a.m. on November 21 and prohibited the printing house from giving the printed edition of the paper to their client.
A man who said he was a colonel told the paper’a editor-in-chief, Alexander Boldyrev, in a phone conversation, that officials had received a complaint about the paper, which was accused of illegal election campaigning, and told the editor to come to the police stations with documents for the paper.
The paper’s journalists said illegal attempts to seize the paper’s circulation have been made before and that law enforcement agencies commonly do this before elections.
“The paper’s editorial board sees the recent incident as a major violation of the federal law On the Mass Media and of the constitutional rights of citizens to freedom of speech and dissemination of information,” the paper’s journalists said in a statement.
“The edition of the paper, as usual, contained a lot of materials on corruption in the country and in our city. However, the main thing for me is that it contained an article on the Day of Memory of Galina Starovoitova. November 20 is the 13th anniversary of her killing. Some of our journalists knew Galina Vasilyevna. We consider her our political teacher,” said Pankov.
