WAN Creates Legal Commission to Monitor Press Freedom in Poland
The World Association of Newspapers has appointed two international media law experts to a legal commission to monitor press freedom in Poland, where the government is using the courts to harass an independent newspaper in an apparent attempt to bring it under State control.
Geoffrey Robinson, QC, from the United Kingdom, and Egbert Dommering, from the Netherlands, are the first members of the commission, which will monitor civil and criminal court cases brought against the publishing company and Managing Board of Presspublica, the publisher of the Rzeczpospolita daily.
In Poland, a dozen lawsuits have been brought against Presspublica in what Mr Dommering described an attempt to “bring the editorial content of the paper back into the influence of a ruling political majority in government.”
