(WiPC/IFEX) – The WiPC of International PEN is deeply concerned for the safety of playwright Pierre Mumbere Mujomba and the owner of the house in which he lives.
According to information received by PEN, Mujomba’s play “The Last Envelope” (“La dernière enveloppe”) was performed on 21 January 2003. The play is political in nature. During the performance, a member of the public asked Mujomba where he was living when he wrote the play. Mujomba told the enquirer and pointed out the owner of the house who was in the audience.
The next day, a group of unidentified men appeared at the house where Mujomba is living. They tracked down the house’s owner and took him away. He has not been seen since. On 23 January, some of Mujomba’s friends were questioned about the playwright.
