(MISA/IFEX) – On 25 February 1998 opposition United National Independent
Party (UNIP) member and writer Frederick Mwanza was released from detention
by President Chiluba. Mwanza, 67, was released together with five others
when Chiluba revoked their presidential detention order. He was arrested on
14 November 1997 for suspected involvement in the failed coup of 28 October.
Mwanza subsequently challenged his detention in the Lusaka High Court but
the court has yet to announce its verdict. In an interview with “The Post”
on 28 February, Mwanza paid tribute to all the people who campaigned for his
release from detention.

Mwanza is a frequent contributor to the state owned “Times of Zambia” and
the “Post.” His articles, many of which concentrate on political and
economic affairs, have been consistently critical of the Movement for
Multi-Party Democracy’s (MMD) economic policies.
