A young Afghan journalist, Mohammad Shahed Naeemi, lost his life following a suicide attack in the capital city of Kabul early in the morning of Sunday 26 January 2014.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the bomber targeted a bus carrying Afghan National Army (ANA) staff to work. Two civilians and two ANA soldiers were killed and 22 others wounded in the bombing.
The director of Nawa Radio Station and Sabah TV channel told the Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) that Naeemi, an employee of the radio station, happened to be near the bus, waiting for the staff car.
Naeemi, 22, had been employed as the producer and host of two social and literary programs on Nawa Radio since September 2013, the station director added.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, the most deadly since a devastating assault on a Lebanese restaurant on 17 January killed 21 foreigners and Afghan civilians.
Naeemi was the second Afghan journalist to lose his life in four days, after the body of Noor Ahmad Noori, producer and presenter of Boost radio, was discovered in the capital of southern Helmand province on Thursday 23 January.
AFJC’s findings show that since 1993 as many as 39 journalists, writers and other media workers have been killed in Afghanistan — 23 of them in targeted attacks and 16 others as a result of the conflict and explosions.
