(CEHURDES/IFEX) ? CEHURDES condemns the attack by an unidentified group on a vehicle belonging to the “Kantipur” newspaper, which was carrying press materials.
According to “Kantipur”, on 4 December 2006, at 6:00 p.m. (local time), a group of six youths on three motorcycles stopped the vehicle on its way to the newspaper’s printing press and roughed up the driver, Basu Parajuli. Parajuli later said that the youths claimed to be Maoists and had harangued him, saying that the newspaper wrote “anything it liked.”
CEHURDES condemns the attack on the press vehicle and the mistreatment of its driver. CEHURDES believes that such acts targeted at undermining press freedom and intimidating media personnel must be stopped by all concerned.
