(MISA/IFEX) – In a 9 April 2001 meeting, government representatives, governors of the local content committee, Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) board and management agreed that the ZBC needs to serve the Zimbabwean public better and meet the demands of public broadcasters in the new millennium, “The Herald” reported on 10 April.
It was agreed that there is a need to speed up the restructuring of the public broadcaster in line with the new Broadcasting Services Act 2001. Minister of State for Information and Publicity Jonathan Moyo met with the acting chairperson of the ZBC board, Amy Tsanga, the chairperson of the board of governors’ local content committee, Doreen Sibanda, and ZBC management to discuss the ongoing restructuring.
The meeting agreed that the restructuring must facilitate efficient and effective delivery of programmes with local content. They also agreed to meaningfully engage local artists and independent producers to meet local content requirements, as well as promote a vibrant cultural and arts industry.
“The meeting also heard that the ZBC board is due to meet next week to finalise and begin implementing the restructuring plan,” the Department of Information and Publicity said in a 9 April statement.
The government has said that ZBC will be affected by the seventy five per cent local content clause in the new Broadcasting Act (see IFEX alerts of 10, 9, 6 and 5 April, 28, 19 and 12 March and 21 February 2001, 26, 19, 12 and 5 October, 28, 25 and 20 September 2000).
