(WAN/IFEX) – In a 24 May 2000 letter to President Emomali Rahmonov, WAN and the World Editors Forum expressed their outrage at the murder of broadcasting director Saifullo Rakhimov.
According to reports, on the evening of 20 May, Rakhimov, chairman of Tajikistan’s state-run radio and television, was shot and killed as he returned home from work. Rakhimov was gunned down by six men who blocked his car as it neared his house. The gunmen, dressed in camouflage uniforms, reportedly opened fire with a submachine gun, hitting Rakhimov in the chest and head.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the president:
- expressing serious concerned that Rakhimov might have been murdered because of his professional activities
- calling on him to ensure that a thorough investigation into his murder is conducted and that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice
- urging him to do everything in his power to ensure that all members of the media in Tajikistan are able to carry out their profession free from violence
