IAPA is concerned at accusations made by the government of Panama
against journalists as well as national and foreign media outlets,
following numerous news reports of alleged irregularities in the
government’s last electoral campaign.
President Ernesto Perez Balladares and other civil servants
accused journalists and media outlets, including “La Prensa”, “The
New York Times”, “The Miami Herald” and the London-based “The
Economist”, of orchestrating a conspiracy and misinformation
campaign against the government through reports on the alleged
influx of drug money into the government’s last electoral
campaign. The government told the media it would “(not allow) it
to continue soiling the good name of Panama.”

Send appeals to the President of Panama:
media outlets of conspiring and threatens them, its comments do
not constitute mere criticism so much as an attack on press
freedom and on journalists’ right to inform
