(Adil Soz/IFEX) – Journalist Razhabboi Raupov was attacked by an unknown individual outside his home on 6 July 2005 at 2:30 p.m. (local time). The incident occured in Shafirkan district, Bukhara region. The attacker struck the journalist with an iron bar and fled the scene. Raupov suffered serious head injuries and was taken to the district hospital, where he underwent surgery. Doctors said the journalist remains in serious condition.
Raupov’s recent attempts to launch a newspaper were unsuccessful. Bukhara’s Press Department refused to register the journalist’s paper, “Shofirkon kuzgusi”, after he issued a pilot edition on 30 March. The pilot edition included several stories criticising district official Akhmad Rakhmanov and accusing him of gerrymandering.
Republican newspapers “Fidokor”, “Ishonch” and “Adolat” have often published Raupov’s articles. The journalist has often reported on social problems and criticised Bukhara officials.
