(Adil Soz/IFEX) – During the night of 6-7 November 2005, unknown individuals vandalised the offices of “Region-Plus” newspaper in Kapchagai, southern Kazakhstan.
On the morning of 7 November, newspaper staff found stones in the editorial office and noticed that a glass balcony door had been broken. Police believe the attackers had a key to enter the newspaper’s premises.
Both the police and “Region-Plus” journalists believe the attack was an attempt to intimidate the newspaper’s staff. The paper has published a number of articles critical of local authorities. It also published reports about Zharmakhan Tuyakbai, an opposition candidate for the presidency. “Region-Plus” journalists have also not ruled out the possibility that the attack may be connected to competition among local newspapers.
