(Adil Soz/IFEX) – On the evening on 2 October 2006, the former chief editor of the opposition newspaper “Alternativa”, Albert Zhiger, was attacked by two unidentified men while on his way home, in Taraz, southern Kazakhstan. They knocked him to the ground and brutally beat him, causing him to bleed. They reportedly told him, as they beat him, that they had previously given him warnings.
He was taken to hospital with severe bruises on his body and face. The journalist believes the attack was connected to his reporting. A police investigation is underway.
In March 2005, unknown individuals broke into his apartment, taking documents and disks containing important materials (see IFEX alert of 31 March 2005).
The journalist is known for a number of critical reports. He is now working as press secretary for the opposition party Alga.
