(Adil Soz/IFEX) – On 13 April 2006 at approximately 7:00 p.m. (local time), the editor of “Versiya” newspaper, Yaroslav Golyshkin, was assaulted by two unknown persons on the porch of his house in Pavlodar, northern Kazakhstan
The assailants approached the journalist and asked him if he could light their cigarettes, then subjected him to a severe beating. The men then left empty-handed, leaving the journalist’s money, laptop computer, mobile phone and other valuables behind. The journalist was taken to hospital with a brain concussion and head trauma.
Both the victim and his father, Vasiliy Golyshkin, a well known journalist in Pavlodar and the founder of “Versiya”, believe the assault was related to Yaroslav Golyshkin’s work, and in particular to the recent publication in the newspaper of an article entitled, “Ei mozhno vse” (“It can do whatever it wants”), which reported on the kidnapping of a financial police officer.
“Versiya” is known for its coverage of crime stories, and has a circulation of 14,200 copies.
