(Adil Soz/IFEX) – On 8 April 2007, a group of unidentified men broke into the printing press building of the independent weekly “Lada” in Aktau, western Kazakhstan, and set fire to the facility, causing extensive damage.
Firefighters have no doubt that it was an arson attack. Police have launched an investigation into the case.
Gennady Skraglenko, the director and founder of the printing press, believes the arson is related to a recent series of critical articles in the newspaper. “We would like to believe it was not arson, but it looks like retaliation for criticism,” said Skraglenko.
“Lada”, which has been publishing since 1996, is known for its serious and critical reporting. Its circulation reaches 10,000.
