Despite his election promise to clean up Philippine politics and follow a “straight path”, current president Benigno Aquino III’s regime continues to be plagued by human rights violations. Speaking out against the perils of extractive industries remains a risky proposition in the Philippines. Environmental advocates, indigenous leaders and members of the media have been targeted for criticising officials and voicing concerns about the environmental and health impacts of activities, such as large-scale mining, illegal logging and mega-dams. The government has been urged to ensure that the killings of environmental advocates do not go unpunished and to cease deploying paramilitary forces in mining areas.
