(Adil Soz/IFEX) – On 28 February 2006, Mekhribon Betiyeva, a reporter for Radio Liberty, Kazakhstan, was detained by Kazakh border guards near the Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan border, after having interviewed local residents.
At the time, she was working on a story about a conflict between Kazakh frontier guards and an Uzbekistan citizen. The journalist said she earlier received official permission to stay at the border zone. The guards took her to the frontier division after trying to seize the tape of her interviews. She was released after fours hours in detention.
“I am confident that the purpose of the detainment was clearly to stop her from reporting on the conflict,” said Yelena Malygina, Adil Soz’s deputy president.
