(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to the minister of the interior, Spartak Poçi, RSF
expressed its grave concern about the shooting of journalist Vjollca
Karanxa, in Pogradec (in the country’s south). The organisation noted with
satisfaction that an inquiry had been launched in order to determine the
circumstances surrounding this attack. “We request that you keep us informed
of the inquiry’s progress,” asked Robert Ménard, the organisation’s
secretary-general.
On 23 November 1999, Karanxa, a journalist with RTP, the local television
station, was shot and seriously injured while leaving a school where she had
completed a report. Her assailants opened fire from an automobile. The
journalist was rushed to hospital where she underwent surgery.
