(Adil Soz/IFEX) – On 14 September 2005, unidentified individuals broke into the home of popular journalist Alexei Goncharov in the city of Shymkent, southern Kazakhstan, forcing the door of his flat open.
The intruders took a golden chain and earrings, but left money, electronic gear and all other valuables behind, after scattering documents and other items all over the flat. They also tore the journalist’s portrait off the wall, leaving all other pictures intact.
Goncharov believes the incident is an attempt to threaten him and is connected to his work. In 2004, he was the editor-in-chief of the independent opposition newspaper “Neizvestnaya Rodina.” He is currently a reporter for “Kursiv” newspaper.
The journalist recently received several threatening calls from an unknown individual, following the publication of an article that criticised the actions of a local entrepreneur.
Goncharov has filed a formal report with police and an investigation is underway.
