Il nâest pas facile dâêtre journaliste au Chili. Les lois « desacato » â ainsi nommées parce quâelles mettent les fonctionnaires à lâabri de la critique publique â sont systématiquement invoquées par le gouvernement pour réduire au silence les journalistes qui osent remettre leurs actions en question.
Mais, plutôt que de se taire, les journalistes sâorganisent. Plus de cinquante dâentre eux ont formé une organisation â la première du genre au Chili â pour défendre leur droit à la libre expression, rapporte lâInternational Center for Journalists (ICFJ).
Lors dâune cérémonie le mois dernier, lâAssociation des journalistes pour la liberté dâexpression (Asociacion de Periodistas por la Libertad de Expresion) a émis une déclaration précisant que son objectif principal était de surveiller et de rapporter les violations de la liberté dâexpression au Chili.
« Lâidée consiste à former un réseau dâalerte afin dâinformer les gens dâattaques contre le droit à la libre expression », déclare Alejandra Matus, auteure bien connue qui a participé à la fondation du groupe et qui a reçu des menaces au Chili en raison de son travail. Le nouveau groupe a reçu lâaval de lâÃcole de journalisme de lâUniversité du Chili, ainsi que du syndicat des travailleurs de la Télévision Nationale du Chili.
