La Asociación Mundial de Periódicos (WAN) celebrará su 60° Congreso Mundial de Periódicos, 14° Foro Mundial de Editores y feria comercial en Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica del 3 al 18 de junio.
El evento arrancará con una mesa redonda sobre la libertad de prensa en África – «La clave para el buen gobierno y el desarrollo» el 3 de junio.
A pesar de protestas de la Asociación de Periódicos de China, la WAN entregará su prestigioso premio Pluma Dorada de la Libertad al periodista chino Shi Tao el 4 de junio. Shi Tao está cumpliendo actualmente una sentencia de 10 años por escribir acerca de las restricciones a los medios en el periodo previo al 15 aniversario de la masacre en la plaza de Tiananmen en 2004. La Asociación de Periódicos de China afirma que el tribunal chino «manejó el caso de acuerdo con la ley y dictó la sentencia adecuada» y que la constitución china protege la libertad de prensa.
Se espera que asistan a los eventos más de 1,500 redactores de periódicos, editores en jefe y otros altos ejecutivos de periódicos.
