Raymond Louw, un «caballo de batalla» sudafricano que ha librado una batalla contra las leyes de desacato en la región, ganó el Premio Mondi Shanduka al Logro por la Obra de Toda la Vida 2006, concedido por Mondi Shanduka Newsprint y la Asociación de Periódicos de Sudáfrica en abril.
Louw tiene el crédito de hacer del «Rand Daily Mail» «el periódico de calidad que era», como editor de la publicación de 1966 a 1977. Presidió la Campaña por Medios Abiertos (1985 a 1994) y ha hecho importantes aportes al Instituto por la Libertad de Expresión, que encabezó durante varios años. También presidió el Fideicomiso por la Defensa de los Medios (1988 a 1994), que financió a periodistas que se enfrentaban a la represión. En 1994, Louw fue nombrado miembro del International Press Institute (Instituto Internacional de Prensa, IPI).
Louw sigue «librando la batalla buena». Hoy es parte del capítulo de Sudáfrica del Instituto de Medios de África Austral. Louw encabeza una batalla contra las «leyes de desacato» en países africanos que consideran un delito la crítica a su Gobierno y sus líderes. También ha participado en la campaña del Foro Nacional de Editores de Sudáfrica contra las leyes inconstitucionales de la era del apartheid.
