¿Qué tienen en común un historiador de la etnia uighur, un sociologo egipcio, un escritor afano y un periodista de Camerún? Son los recientes ganadores de los Premios PEN-Novib 2002, que se otorgan en reconocimiento a sus valientes esfuerzos para resistir la censura.
Anunciados por PEN Internacional y Oxfam Holanda (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Internationale Bijstand, NOVIB) el 13 de diciembre de 2002, los premios dotados de USD 2,500 en efectivo fueron para Tohti Tunyaz, Saad Eddin Ibrahim, Siamak Pourzand, Esmat Qaney y Philip Njaru. La esposa de Siamak Pourzand, Mehrangize Kar, acepto los premios a nombre de los ganadores.
Los Premios PEN-NOVIB están financiados por el Fondo de Emergencia de PEN y NOVIB y se entregan cada año a cinco personas cuyos escritos los hayan llevado a ser víctimas de la persecucion política en su país o los hayan obligado a exiliarse.
