Veintisiete profesionales de los medios de 17 países de todo el mundo recibieron becas Hellman/Hammett en reconocimiento a su valor de cara a la persecución política, señala un comunicado de prensa de Human Rights Watch.
Las becas Hellman/Hammett se entregan cada año a escritores de diferentes partes del mundo que estén en crisis financiera a consecuencia de haber expresado sus puntos de vista.
El programa de subvenciones comenzó en 1989 cuando la dramaturga estadounidense Lillian Hellman dispuso en su testamento que su patrimonio se usara para ayudar a los escritores perseguidos.
El comunicado de Human Rights Watch señaló que algunos de los escritores homenajeados este año fueron acosados, atacados, indiciados, encarcelados, acusados con cargos inventados o torturados por proporcionar información de fuentes no gubernamentales. Otros practicaron la autocensura.
Las becas Hellman/Hammett van de USD 1,000 a un máximo de USD 10,000. Human Rights Watch señala que las becas, además de proporcionar la asistencia financiera que es tan necesaria, enfocan la atención en la represión de la libertad de palabra y la censura al dar a conocer la persecución que sufrieron los beneficiarios de las becas.
